0 Auf der Konferenz präsentierte Maximilian Nebel das Paper „From System to Teammate: Human-Centered AI in the Industrial Internet of Things".

The Department of Enterprise Computing was represented at I3E 2026 in Tampere

0 At the conference, Maximilian Nebel presented the paper “From System to Teammate: Human-Centered AI in the Industrial Internet of Things.” In his research, Maximilian explores how the use of human-centered AI (HCAI) can be described in the context of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—that is, AI systems that support workers in making industrial decisions without taking control away from them. Based on a systematic review of existing research, the study shows that such systems are increasingly evolving from purely technical tools into genuine team members in the decision-making process. According to the study, however, this transformation does not happen on its own. Three factors determine whether AI is actually perceived as a helpful colleague: First, the system must be tailored to the specific task at hand, rather than being used as a one-size-fits-all solution. Second, the nature of the collaboration matters—for example, how clearly an AI explains its recommendations and how easily employees can challenge them. And third, the company needs clear rules regarding how data is handled and who bears which responsibilities. Only when these three factors work together can a system truly become a team member. Participation in the I3E also provided a good opportunity for professional exchange with the international information systems community, as well as for discussing current developments in the field of human-AI interaction in industrial contexts. The paper has been published as part of the conference proceedings by Springer and is available under the following DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-032-38014-2_5 …

2026 Retreat in Berlin

0 This year’s retreat also served as an opportunity for professional exchange regarding the progress of the fellows’ doctoral dissertations and for collegial fellowship. Participants presented new findings, key results, and the next steps in their doctoral projects in the areas of nursing care, dementia, infrastructure, queer aging, and the concept of generations. In addition, visits to two research institutions central to the research network provided opportunities for further discussion and networking related to social policy: At the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA), the focus was on the topic of “Work and Aging.” At the German Center for Aging Research (DZA), presentations included the German Aging Survey (DEAS) as well as current research projects on the development of housing cost burdens over the life course. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their commitment and for the insightful days in Berlin! …

Klausurtagung 2026 in Berlin

Annual Field Trip to the "Werkstatt über den Teichen" (WÜT) in the Summer Semester of 2026

0 Workshops for people with disabilities (WfbM) continue to be at the center of social debates. Issues such as compensation, transition rates, and legal frameworks are widely discussed, but often without involving the employees at these facilities. As part of the course “The System of Workshops for People with Disabilities (WfbM)—(No) Prospects for School Graduates from Vulnerable Groups?” students in the Special Education Teacher Training program were able to not only engage with the subject matter theoretically but also enrich their understanding with practical experiences through the field trip. In particular, the diverse insights gained into a workshop, as well as the dialogue with staff members, helped generate new perspectives and stimulated reflection on this topic. …

Annual excursion of the Laboratory of Equipment Design 2026

0 During the annual excursion of the Laboratory of Equipment Design on Tuesday, August 18, we visited the lake in Haltern. The weather didn't stop us from taking a trip across the lake and down the Stever River. Because of the rain, we just swapped the canoes for pedal boats, but we still had a lot of fun. After a boat tour of Lake Haltern, we wrapped up the day with some good company in the beer garden. …
