An oscilloscope displays the temporal variation of voltages. Multimeters display voltages or currents at a moment that cannot be precisely determined, or they calculate an average value. The key benefit of an oscilloscope is therefore the ability to determine the exact temporal progression of the voltage being measured. The X-axis serves as the time axis, and the Y-axis displays the voltage value. Since most oscilloscopes can track and display multiple signals simultaneously (“multichannel oscilloscope”), even the temporal relationships between multiple signals become visible.
The oscilloscope is therefore an indispensable tool in the design and analysis of telecommunications systems. In this experiment, you will not only learn how to operate the equipment correctly but also how to identify errors. In addition, you will perform sample measurements on signals that are of interest in telecommunications, for example.
